James Mounce was born at Torrington, Devon on 24 May 1871. A liveryman by trade and residing at Brantford, Ont, he attested to 4^th Bn, CEF on 22 Sep 1914 at age 42. At the time, he claimed 6 years previous service with 25^th Brant Dragoons. He deployed to the UK with 4^th Bn and was appointed Transport Sgt in the UK. He embarked for France on 17 Aug 1915 and served there 16 ½ months until evacuated to England suffering from influenza. Thereafter, he was attached to temporarily to 36^th Bn and other units in England. He returned to Canada 25 Feb 1919 and was discharged on demobilization on 20 Mar 1919. He returned to his Militia regiment, now the 10^th Dragoons (from 1 Dec 1920.
