William Wilkin Mercer was born in Sarawak County, Ont on 22 Oct 1885. He was a mechanic by trade and had 3 months service with the CASC when he attested to the 224th Forestry Bn. CEF at Toronto on 28 Mar 1916. He arrived in England 28 Apr 1916 where he was posted among various units including the Canadian Engineers Mechanical Transport (CEMT) Coy, and the Canadian Corps MT Coy. On return to Canada, he was discharged on demobilization at No. 2 District Depot, Toronto on 18 Jun 1919.
