Clifford Earle Snair was born at Black Point, NS, on 4 Sep 1895. A lumberman by trade, he had served over 2years in the 66th Regt (Princess Louise Fusiliers) when he attested for CEF service at Halifax on 12 Apr 1918. He was assigned to 1st Depot Bn, NS Regt and subsequently served in the field with the 85th Bn (NS Highlanders) (12 Bde, 4th Div). He was a very late arrival to that battalion and perhaps for that reason is not included on the roll of the unit published in the 85th regimental history.
