Arthur Edward Mahoney was born at Hamilton, ON on 20 Oct 1885. He was a "rock driller" by trade and had some previous service with the 44th Lincoln & Welland Regt.  He attested at Welland, ON on 20 Aug 1915 at age 30 into 1st Depot Bn, 2nd Central Ontario Regt, under the name of Edward Manning and claiming to be from Winnipeg.  He declared his true name as Arthur Edward Mahoney on 14 Feb 1918. He was married with 2 daughters.  He did not travel overseas until 1918, arriving in England on 4 Mar 1918 aboard the SS Melita.  He was posted initially to the 8th Reserve Bn, and briefly to the 54th (Central Ontario) Bn on 22 Sept 1918 and thence to the 21st (Kingston) Bn on 29 Sept 1918. After service in France, he returned to Canada with the 21st Bn and was discharged on demobilization at Kingston on 24 May 1919. he resided at Hamliton and died in 1938.  

Sold with a souvenir ID token, a French 1868 silver 5 franc coin, reserve erased and engraved to "A.E. Mahony 175234 21 Bn Canadians", plus a 21st Bn cap badge, and copied extracts from his VAC service and file and nominal roll page from the history of the 21st Bn.
