(a) Egypt 1882, dated rev, engr J.H.ALLEN GNR RN, HMS CYGNET;
(b) Khedive’s Star 1882, bz, unnamed s issued.
HMS CYGNET (15th of 16 ships), A composite screw gunboat of 455 tons, w/2 x 64 pdr MLR and 2 x 20 pdr guns; 1874-1889 (sold for BU).
John Henry Allen was born on 20 Nov 1854 at Truro, Cornwall. He joined the Royal Navy for an initial 10 -year engagement as a Boy, 2nd Class, on 20 Nov 1872. He was advanced to Gunner’s Mate on 7 Oct 1880 in HMS Ruby; then in HMS CYGNET from 2 May 1881 to 8 Oct 1884, followed by other ships. He was advanced to Chief Gunner on 1 Apr 1900 and promoted Lieutenant on 10 Mar 1904. He was placed on Retired Pay (age) on 20 Nov 1909 at age 55. He was recalled for service and promoted Lt Commander from 1 Aug 1914 to 23 Nov 1919 again on Retired Pay. He died 12 Aug 1925 at age 71 and never received his WWI medals.
