Joseph Martin was born at Montreal on 4 Jul 1878. He was a cook or architect by trade (his documents vary on this). He attested at Valcartier on 19 Aug 1914 to the 12th (Quebec & Maritimes) Bn, CEF at age 36. He sailed with that unit from Quebec on 4 Oct 1914. In England, 12th Bn became 12th Reserve Bn and Martin transferred to PPCLI, joining that unit in the field on 24 Feb 1915. He was wounded in action (gunshot wound to the neck) near St. Eloi on 28 Feb 1915, one of 17 casualties to PPCLI during a "reconnaissance in force" against a new German trench. After brief hospitalization, he returned to duty, but later was evacuated and hospitalized in England for medical conditions and was struck off strength of PPCLI on 8 May 1915.  Thereafter he remained in England undergoing extensive medical issues and treatment until he returned to Canada on 3 Jun 1916 and was dicharged as "no longer physically fit for war service" at Quebec on 30 July 1916.

Joseph Martin died in Canada on 7 Jun 1938.  Sold with a copy of his attestation paper from his LAC file.
