Sgt Fred Foster was born 10 Nov 1884 at Harrogate, England.  Before immigrating to Canada, he served 6 years in the West Yorks (Territorial Force) (3rd Volunteer Bn, The PoW (West Yorkshire Regt).  He attested for service in the CEF on 11 Mar 1915 to No. 6 Field Ambulance, CAMC (2nd Div) at Montreal.  He sailed with that unit, arriving in England on 24 Apr 1915 and in France on 16 Sep 1915. He was appointed L/Cpl on 11 Apr 1917, promoted to Cpl on 8 Aug 1917 and to Sgt on 25 Nov 1917.  He was awarded the DCM on 15 Nov 1918:

"During an attack on enemy positions in front of a village, in thick mist, this NCO controlled and directed his bearer squads with coolness and resource, dressing cases in the open under heavy fire, and managing to keep up with the advance. His disregard of danger materially assisted in the speedy evacuation of the wounded." [2nd Div Order 4299 of 4 Oct 1918 and LG 31011, pg 13460 of 15 Nov 1918.

He returned to Canada, arriving at Halifax on 23 May 1919, and was discharged on demobilization at 4 District Depot, Montreal the following day.

The DCM was sent to his next of kin (Mother) under HQ MD 4 letter dated 16 Jan 1919 (the original sold with the medal). It appears to never have been mounted with his service medals that would have been issued to him later. (Hie is entitled to the trio: 1914-15 Star, BWM, Vic)

Sold with copies of his attestation paper and other documents from his LAC service file (available on line), the original transmittal letter, box of issue and other extracts from references.  One of 1,930 DCMs awarded to the CEF.
