Pendry Watkins was born on 9 October 1894 at Wolverhampton, England. He was a labourer by trade with one year previous service with 3rd Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons, Peterborough, when he was attested to the 59th (E. Ont and W. Que) Bn, CEF at Belleville, ON on 16 April 1915, the day after the unit was authorized, at age 20. The 59th sailed on 5 April 1916 and arrived in England on 11 April, where it was absorbed by the 39th Bn and thence to the 6th Reserve Bn for reinforcements to the Canadian Corps.  Watkins was posted to the RCR in the field, arriving on 29 June 1916. He served with the RCR for the remainder of the war, was appointed L/Cpl in the field on 22 May 1917; and promoted to Cpl on 15 August 1917. His only injury was an accidental bayonet wound to his right foot on 31 October 1917, for which he was treated and returned to service. He was SOS to Canada on 8 February 1919 and discharged on demobilization at 3 District Depot, Kingston, on 10 March 1919. He subsequently
served in the RCR (Permanent Force) Bn and was awarded the LS&GC Medal in 1937.  He died on 24 February 1940.  A good WEI and inter-war regular soldier’s group.
