Francis John Knowles, born Birmingham, England 18 May 1879, a teamster by trade, and a veteran of 12 years service with the RA and RHA, has three separate enlistments in the CEF. He attested first on 16 Feb 1915 at Winnipeg, at age 36, as No. 446, an original member of No. 2 DAC, CEF.  His second enlistment was almost 1 year later on 5 Jan 1916, as No. 311870, a member of No. 3 Section, 3 DAC, again at Winnipeg. It appears that he went overseas with this unit, but was discharged for some reason.  He enlisted a third time on 2 Jan 1917, under No. 2043512, in No. 4 Section, DAC, again at Winnipeg, but this time he changed his birth year to 1881, thus reducing his age by 2 years!  Further research would be required to fill in his service record, but it is probable that he did not serve beyond England and that this is his only medal.
