James Mepham, Sr was born at Hastings, England on 8 Dec 1874.  Married and a carpenter by trade, he attested to the 156^th (Leeds & Grenville) Bn, CEF at Brockville on 28 Mar 1916 at age 41 years. 

He sailed with the battalion on 18 Oct 1916 and the battalion was dispersed into the reinforcement system upon arrival in England. James Mepham remained in England for the duration of the war, probably owing to his age. Thus, this is his only medal. Medals to reinforcement units that were not part of the Cdn Corps are scarce.
